Have you been watching a lot of Hallmark movies this year? There are, like, 30 new ones to choose from. I’ve not watched as many as I thought I might (last year, I was recovering from surgery at this time, so I watched a lot of them.) So far this year, my favourite is Christmas in Evergreen: Tidings of Joy. The movie gently pokes fun at the genre, does not vilify city living, and has a happily ever after that does not involve the protagonist renouncing her hard-won career in the name of love (seriously, I watched one where she gave up her international art museum curation job for the dude from Entourage.) Plus, it features adorable dogs and a bevy of jewel-toned winter coats, which is the whole reason we watch these movies, no?
I caught one the other day that I thought was a Hallmark movie called Mr. 365. The language was a bit rough for Hallmark and the two lead characters seemed to get friendly a whole lot sooner than in Hallmark land. I googled it and it turns out it was a movie from Passionflix, which is a production company and romance-movie streaming site run by Elon Musk’s sister, Tosca. Who knew? The movie was actually quite funny.
To really get me in the holiday spirit, however, I’ve been watching Long Lost Family which reunites adopted adults with their birth families. Every episode is a tear-jerker and most end on a hopeful note. The show reinforces that, in the end, we are all just looking for love and acceptance. The show could be exploitive, but so far has managed to avoid that. It is a giant ad for Ancestry.com, but that’s less annoying than it sounds. It’s a winner in my books.
